For the would be gunsmith or tinker with an interest in the older "shootin' irons" of the 1880's this would be a great book to start with.The authors provide a brief history of firearms and gunpowder and a glossary of terms used in the trade. There are plenty of chapters devoted to fire-arm dis-assembly, repair, cleaning, making parts and even shooting techniques. Especially helpful were the chapters on cleaning and soldering brass, copper and other metals. A lot of this book pertains to muzzle-loaders which were still in use. How to re-rifle a worn out barrel, case-hardening, tempering springs, making a "cherry" to produce a round ball bullet mold, browning and bluing gun barrels, chemistry used in the fire-arms and gunsmith trade and more. True, the language come across as a bit awkward if not archaic but it was standard in 1883. If you're a cowboy action shooting fan and enjoy Colt single actions and the early Winchesters, give this book a read.
As a black powder buff, and avid do it yourself guy, this book is at the top of my list!
When someone comes in the shop with an old rifle or revolver. It's always good to know the techniques used to make it, which helps drastically in solving most problems. Also good tips for amateur or pro gunsmiths on how to build these guns the old way. I like to think the old ways are just as good as current highly mechanized ways and just as accurate with up to date tooling.
This is a book that was written in the 1800s, and a lot of the techniques are rather dated, but it still gives you insight into the pioneering work done by some very knowledgeable designers. Just because they lived before the turn of the 19th Century, doesn't mean that they were stupid, and there is quite a lot here for any gunsmith to learn.

Just love this old time metal working. It was unreal what they could do with just simple tools.
This is really good book for working on firearms older than 1900. Has lots of good old style gunsmithing techniques.
